Events at Studio 8

Demonstration Events

Different from workshops, demonstrations are more focused on teaching.  It is important to note that you do not take your own images at these events.

The point is that I demonstrate the concept and show sample images (I use a tether so you can see the images on a laptop or monitor).

These events are only one hour long and I try to make them very inexpensive (in part because I can allow more participants).  The intent is to give you information that allows you to start your own shoots more comfortably.

Tutorial/Coaching Events

We will normally pair our demonstrations with opportunities for one-on-one coaching.  These typically last for an hour (although you could of course book multiple ones).

After you sign up we will send you a questionnaire so you can describe the concept you want to create. The model and I will follow up with questions as needed to ensure we understand your idea. A reference image will be helpful, but we will also want to understand why you want to reproduce it - what emotion or feeling made you pick it? On the day of the event the model and I will finalize a shoot plan with you and help you implement it.

Tutorials are more expensive than workshops because you pay the entire model fee plus the (discounted) studio fee for the hour. On the other hand that amount will be less than booking the model for the typical 2-hour minimum, and you are much more likely to get the shots you are looking for.

Workshops

Workshops are a great way to practice new skills, work with other photographers, and get some great images.

Our workshops are typically scheduled for 2 hours. We hire a model for the workshop. Up to 5 photographers can attend. We plan looks and concepts with the model, so those are set. If a workshop includes nude looks the description will clearly state that. We will plan lighting setups, but the group can always agree to modify these.

During the workshop each photographer works one-on-one with the model for about 5 minutes for each look. To get the best outcome, we do not permit "side-shooting" - only one active camera at a time.

All props and equipment are provided. You need to have a camera with a hot shoe that accepts an external flash unit (you do not need a flash) since that is how the the trigger for the strobes is attached. Note that some cameras only accept proprietary flash adapters. Your hot shoe should have a center contact point. Consult your camera manual or contact us if you are not sure.

You also need to be able to put your camera into manual mode.

Studio Days

Studio Days are a great way to book a professional model in a fully equipped studio for as little as one hour (most models require a minimum of two hours for private bookings). In most cases you pay the model's standard hourly rate; some models will offer discounted multi-hour rates. The studio fee for Studio Days is discounted to $35/hour (from the standard $50/hour).

Studio Days are not workshops, you need to come prepared with a creative plan. While the registration page will contain some information on the model's limits, we strongly suggest that you communicate with the model to agree on the theme for your shoot and any other details (contact information for the model will be on the registration page).

Studio personnel will be on site for the shoot and can provide as much technical assistance with lighting and props as you would like.

You request a time slot on the registration page - in some cases the model will contact you to complete the booking/payment and in other cases you will be invoiced by us. In either case we will invoice you for the studio fee.
